Istanbul sits on two continents, and the ferry between them costs less than a coffee. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar are within a walk of each other in the old city.
It also makes an excellent stopover: a few days here on the way to Europe costs little more than a straight-through fare, and we can build it either way around.
