The tallest free-standing mountain in the world rises to a breath-taking view of Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro offers the adventurous traveller multiple routes to scale the tallest peak in Africa, ranging from the casual Marangu route to the more difficult, but scenic, Machame route.
There are seven official trekking routes by which to ascend and descend: Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Mweka, Rongai, Shira and Umbwe. Of all the routes, Machame is considered the most scenic, albeit steeper, and can be done in six or seven days. Rongai is the quietest. Marangu is relatively easy and the only route with hut accommodation.
